Gaucher Wine Show At the Paris Club Chicago

On Tuesday  September 15th we hosted a wine show for customers and potential customers at the Paris Club in Chicago.  This interior shot looks like a typical Parisian Bistro..

Our  function was in a private room and very well staffed with a great team..

The food was incredible!

Pates : Rabbit  Duck and Country, Cheese, Breads,Olives all aimed at enhancing the wine tasting.
When tasting multiple wines ,there were over 30, eating is essential.

There were three tables of wine:  Sparkling and Champagne, Whites and Rose,  and Reds.

The Paris Club was a great venue, centrally located and easy to get to.  Looking at this picture made me smile, in the old days we took notes, today people take a picture of the bottle and add notes to the photo.

Just Rose

This is the second year we have gone to the "Just Rose"Wine Show.  It was held May 8th to May 10th.
The venue is the beautiful sea side village of Sanury sur Mer.   The tents wrap around the port and continue into the streets.

There were 80 producers and for 10 Euros you got a glass and had a chance to speak to the producers and make appointments to visit the vineyards for further discussions.

The entrance was decorated  and many items were for sale.  Had to buy a tee shirt for wine tasting, Just Rose!

You can see the top of the  tents along the quay.  The blue sky is awesome!

As you might imagine there are clever uses of roses and pink balloons every where!!

The day began cool but by 10:00 it was time to put away sweaters.  Bob O'Neal, Steve and I are seriously tasting and making notes.  hanging the glass around your neck lets you make notes.

The crowds were large but with so many stations and the fact they were spread out it was easy to
taste what you wanted.

The whole town gets involved and all the store fronts are decked out in Pink.

.

This AOC Pallete is one of the smallest AOC's near Nice.  Lovely wine!

It is a great way to taste a number of wines in one place.

Deck Wines

When we first began Wine Adventures, during our wine searching to increase the portfolio,  we would go to Auchon the large super market, in French" Hyper- Marche", and buy a cart full of wines.

We and our September guests would sit on the deck over looking the Mediterranean  and choose wines we liked the best.  We would call the winner, ask if they had an American distributor  and if not  make an appointment to see them.
As you might imagine the pay-off was low.

Today it is much easier, brokers bring us wine to taste and instantly call the producer.  There are no language barriers and we still get to taste on the deck!

With a view of Cap Canaille how could anything taste bad?

Wine Tasting at Chateau Beauchene

May Tasting 2015

 Chateau Beauchene

We tasted with Michel and Dominique Vergniaud Bernard to select the wines for 2015-16 seasons.  All the wines were excellent as usual.
The Chateau Beauchene production is mainly red wines based on blends of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Mourvedre.  They also produce some delicate and fresh roses and white wines.  The white grapes grown at Beauchene are Granache Blanc,Roussane, Marsanne,Viognier. Bourbolink and Clairette.

The wines fall into two categories Historical and Classic, "Chateau Beauchene Range" and new and modern the "Famille Vergniaud-Bernard Range"

This year we are adding the Sens de Syrah. to the Wine Adventures Portfolio.  This Cotes du Rhone wine is 100% Syrah.  The vines are 30 years old from a parcel north of  Orange France where the soil is stoney with clay and limestone.  We carried this wine previously but haven't had it in the portfolio recently.

Vinification  is in French barrels that are 2-6 years old and old barrels that have been plained on the inside.  The minimum aging in oak  is 12 months.
The wine has a wonderful aroma of intensely ripe fruit.  It is a deep red color with a purple hue and the taste is of red ripe fruits, spices and wildflowers and a hint of leather.  it has a long finish.
it goes well with red meats.
You can keep 5-7 years.

The second addition is Chateauneuf Grande Reserve  Hommage  a Odette Bernard Rouge.
This Chateauneuf is 80% Grenache, 14% Syrah, and 5% Mourvedre.  The 100 year old  vines are located  between the villages of Orange and Chateauneuf on terraces of stones and red sand.  Michel produces this wine as a tribute to his mother.

The grapes ferment a minimum of 20 days.  At the end of the fermentation only the best cuvees will be returned to make the wine.  It stays in old French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months.
This wine is exceptional with red meats and heavy sauces.  It also tastes wonderful with dark chocolate desserts.
This wine was given over 90 points by Parker, Tanzer and Robinson.

You can keep 15 - 20 years.

Looking forward to a fall arrival.

Wine Tasting at Domaine La Tour Boisee

One of our long term producers, with us from our  first year in business, is Jean- Louis Poudou of Domaine La Tour Boisee.  The vineyards are located in the Languedoc area of France in the village of Laure. It is near the medieval village of Carcassone and the Canal Midi, in the heart of the Minervois region.
The family estate began in 1826. Today there are 200 acres of vines and over 2500 olive trees. In 1982 Marie- Claude and Jean-Louis took over the estate from her parents and have grown and enhanced the vineyards.
The French Press refer to Jean-Louis as the "Happy King of the Minervois" because he is always smiling.  He is an energetic and creative wine maker who loves what he is doing.

This is all that is left of the Four Towers of Wood that surrounded the property in the XII century.  The vineyards are surrounded by hills and the vines receive the winds from the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean that  enable wonderful growth.

AOC Minervois  Chateau Tour Boisee

Une Histoire de Famille White: The white is a selection of Marsanne 50%, Vermintino 15%, Rousanne 10%, Grenache white 10%, Maccabeu 10%, and Muscat 5%.  The color is golden with aromas of spring flowers and ripe fruit, peaches and pineapple. This white is wonderful with fish.
Une Histoire de Famille Rose:  The rose is Grenache 40%, Syrah 20%, Cinsault 20,  and Mouvedre 20%.  It is a dark pink color with floral aromas and taste.  It pairs well with barbecued white meats.

Bel Serrat:  means beautiful hills

Malbec- Alicante Red:   This is a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Alicante.  The Alicante grapevines are traditional to Minervois and  are over 70 years old and bring a subtle kirsche, cherry flavor to the wine. The wine is a deep purple color and has a subtle elegance.  It pairs well with barbecued meats, sweet and sour dishes, and chicken.

Special Production:

Plantation 1905

Plantation 1905 has an interesting history.  At the beginning of the 20th century there were few methods for fighting insects and diseases that attacked the vineyards.  So in the village of Laure a planting was made of many grape varieties to see which would survive.  These vines were also used for grafting so they are the mothers and grandmothers of many wines in the area.  The Cave Cooperative asked Jean-Louis to take over the care of this 1.6 hectare vineyard that now produces 10,000 bottles of wine.  Jean-Louis was curious what the grapes were and asked the Oneology Program at University of Montpellier to identify the grapes. Four of the 23 varieties are unknown.  These grapes are harvested last and produce a wine that is dark, intense and flavorful.

In 2005 Jean-Louis wanted to buy an operating vineyard next to his land.  The vintner wanted to retire. Jean-Louis formed a cooperative.  Steve and I gladly bought 2 shares or 2 hectares.  Here Steve and Jean-Louis are standing in our vineyards.  The wine is called "My Vineyard", how appropriate.

My Vigne

The wine is dark purple/red and very fruity. It is un-oaked and you can fully appreciate the taste of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. It ages well and is best when served with lamb or steak.

Vins Breban

The Breban Family is one of the last family owned companies producing artisanal sparkling wines in the South of France.
The grand-father, Raymond, started his business in his garage in 1942.  He decided to add a full range of wines from Provence. Since then two generations have managed the company with the same   passion and philosophy for quality.
Their wines are famous in France and throughout the world for premium  hand crafted sparkling wines and hand selected wines of Provence and Corsica.

This map details the areas of wine selections.

The Baron de Breban Rose is  100% Grenache.  It is pale pink in color and has a pleasant nose of strawberry and raspberry.  It is fresh and a well balanced wine.  It is a perfect aperitif wine.

The Baron de Breban White is 80% Ungi Blanc and 20% Colombard.  the wine is a pale yellow color with hints of green.  it has a complex nose with bouquets of citrus fruit, peaches and small white flowers. It is harmonious and fresh.

We tasted with Laurent Breban, the current CEO, Laurent Terrison and Clara a staff person.  We selected a new sparkling Cuvee Laurent named for the CEO.  it is made from the Muscat Grape

There were several other Roses we liked and will have for the 2016 summer season.
