Wine Tasting at the Brookline Liquor Mart April 5, 2014

Saturday we did a Wine Tasting at Brookline Liquor Mart.   We met the owner Jason Katz through the Boston Chapter of Chene de Rotisseurs an international Food and Wine organization.  Steve has been selling them wine for several months. The store has been owned by the Katz  family  for 81 years.  It is a large and open  shop with many wines and liquors from around the world.
The owners and  staff were wonderfully supportive and made the tasting a success.

The tasting started slowly and Steve was able to handle the crowd but in a half an hour we had long lines  so I poured as well.  For us, the best part of tasting is educating people about the wine, the area where the grapes are grown and the families that produce the wine. The crowd was very knowledgeable and enjoyed the stories behind the wine selections and theFrench vintners.

The  six wines we  poured were:

Louis Pierre Chardonnay.   This un-oaked Chardonnay is made by the Roux Family from Burgundy.  Roux Pere & Fils was founded in 1885.  Today they own 70 hectares and are one of the top 10 landholders in Burgundy.  They also have holdings in the Languedoc where these Chardonnay grapes are grown and bottled under the Louis Pierre & Fils name. This chardonnay is in the style of the fine Burgundy Chardonnays.  This wine is very light in color with a floral nose. It is  fruity and an exceptional wine for the price.
This picture is Christian, the father in the center,  Matthieu, the wine maker and Sebastian the export manager on the right on the left.

Tavel Rose from Domaine Chantepierre.  Tavel is often referred to as the" King of Rose". King Philip IV said it was the best wine in France in 1200's. Christian Paly's family has owned the vineyards since the 1500's.  This Tavel has 7 grapes, Grenache, Mouvedre,  Syrah, Cinsault, Picpoul, Bobolinc, and  Carignan.  The vinification is the same as red wine, the color is bold and the taste dry and fruity.  A perfect summer deck or patio wine!
I recently heard it was Ernest Hemingways' favorite wine.  Break the Chardonnay habit and enjoy this outstanding choice!

 Ma Vigne,  Domaine Tour Boisse
In 2005, when a good friend and excellent wine maker Jean Louis Poudou, owner of Tour Boisee in the Minervois region, asked if we would be interested in buying a share of a vineyard he was purchasing we said yes and voila, we own 2 hectares of vineyard  in Minervois.
Poudou has an excellent reputation and the French Wine press calls him " The Happy King of the Minervois".  Jean Louis and Steve in the Gaucher vineyard.

The Cabernet Sauvignon is un-oaked and exhibits a deep red and purple color.  The nose is intense fruit   and the taste is ripe fruit and spice.  It is a great wine to serve with red meat.

Domaine Mazet du Saint Victor, Cotes du Rhone.  The Mazet Cotes du Rhone vineyards are in the medieval village of St. Victor la Coste.  The wine is 70% Grenache, and 30% Syrah.  The taste is of black cherry and blackberry.  The nose is spicy aromatics. It is round and easy to drink.  It is  great with red meat, cheese and grilled vegetables. This Cotes du Rhone won a gold medal at the Orange Wine Competition.

Chateau Beauchene Premier Terroir,  a Cotes du Rhone. A blend of 70% Grenache, vines of 40-95 years, 25% Syrah, 30 years and 5% Mouvedre, 30 years.
The color is a deep ruby red with a nose of ripe red fruits with hints of raspberries and currants.  Very balanced and harmonious.

 Chateau Beauchene Chateauneuf du Pape.
CDP is 84% Grenache, the vines are 40-95 years old,   Syrah 10%, 30 years old and  Mouvedre 6% 30 years old.  The wine is intensely red with purple highlights.  The nose is red fruits, leather, liquorice and spice. This is a powerful well balanced, complex wine.  It can age for several years.

Chateau Beauchene, owned by the Bernard Family has been producing a large portfolio of outstanding wines since the 1780's.  The two wines we poured today were very popular and sold exceptionally well.

Chateau Beauchene in Piolinc France.

Chateau Glorit - Blaye Cotes de Bordeaux.

This wine is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Savignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc.  It stays  in oak barrels for 12 months.
The nose is of very ripe red and black fruit, it has a long pleasant aftertaste.  It is round and elegant.

We did not get the total sales yet but Chateau Beauchene Premier Terroir and Chardonnay sold out.  We were very pleased with the response from the customers. We met some wonderful people and enjoyed the event very much
It was a positive Wine Adventur .
